Which format should you pick?
- League (round-robin) — every team plays every other team once. The fairest format and the most cricket, but the matches add up fast: n teams play n×(n−1)/2 matches, so 8 teams is 28 matches.
- Knockout— lose and you're out. Always one match fewer than the number of teams, so 8 teams is 7 matches. Good for a one- or two-day event.
- Groups + knockout — small leagues first, then the top teams play a knockout. Every team is guaranteed a few matches, and you still get semi-finals and a final. 8 teams in two groups of four, top two going through, is 12 group matches plus 3 knockout matches.
How byes work
A knockout needs 2, 4, 8 or 16 teams to pair up evenly. With any other number, the top seeds get a bye — they skip round 1 and go straight into round 2. Six teams means two byes: four teams play round 1, and the two winners join the two seeded teams in the semi-finals.
In a league with an odd number of teams, one team rests each round instead. Over the whole league every team rests exactly once.
Seeding and the draw
The order you type teams in is the seeding: team 1 is the top seed, and in a knockout the top seed meets the lowest seed. If you'd rather leave it to luck, press Shuffle the draw before you share — the list is reordered at random and the fixtures follow.
For groups, teams are dealt into groups in turn — team 1 to Group A, team 2 to Group B, and so on — so the top seeds are spread across groups. When two teams go through from each group, each group winner meets the runner-up of a different group in the first knockout round.
From fixtures to a schedule
Fixtures say who plays whom; the schedule says when. Count how many matches fit in a day on your ground, keep at least one match between a team's games, and save the knockout for the last day.
